Social Justice

Our Mission Statement

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of SLO County's Social Justice Committee works together to establish justice and peace through five types of social action: education, service, witness, advocacy and direct action. We are committed to be an engine of social change both within the Fellowship, and in the wider community.

We Are a Welcoming Congregation!

The congregation spent nearly two years exploring personal and societal attitudes about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and how we can be a congregation that is open and affirming of them. In 2002, our Fellowship became the 320th Unitarian Universalist congregation to receive official designation from the UUA's Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Concerns. We continue to reach out to and support the BGLT community by our participation in San Luis Obispo's Pride in the Plaza celebration each July, and our commitment to the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equity for all persons, regardless of their affectional preferences, gender identity or sexual orientation.

  • Staffing and sharing an interfaith booth at the Ninth Annual 2005 Pride in the Plaza;
  • Co-sponsoring the formation of a Coalition of Welcoming Churches to bring the glbt and spiritual communities closer;
  • Co-sponsoring SB840, The California Health Insurance Reliability
    Act;
  • Participating in local peace actions;
  • Supporting the People's Kitchen and the Prado Road Homeless Day Center on an ongoing basis, especially notable this year by contributing enough money to send homeless kids to YMCA day camp;
  • Using our building to provide an overflow site for EOC's homeless shelter program each June;
  • Supporting the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry's work to achieve
    marriage equality in the state of California by participating in the "Valentine's for the Governor" campaign, creating a UUs 4 Marriage Equality chapter, and working side by side with PFLAG, GALA and Cal Poly Gays and Lesbians United groups to pass AB849, The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act;
  • Creating a Sunday service on Water Rights, in conjunction with
    UUSC's Justice Sunday's theme; and
  • Producing "Clarence Darrow: the Search for Justice" as a community
    outreach and fundraising event with Gary Anderson of American Legends
    Theatre Works reenacting dramatic scenes from Clarence Darrow's famous
    trials.
